Post-Heat Wave Pool Care: How to Recover Your Pool After Extreme Heat
Uncategorized
At Carolina Family Pool & Patio, we know how brutal North Carolina heat waves can be—and your pool feels it too. After days of intense sun and scorching temperatures, your pool’s water chemistry and overall health can take a hit. Here’s what you should do after a heat wave to get your pool back in perfect shape:
1. Test and Balance Your Water
Extreme heat can cause chlorine levels to plummet and alter your pool’s pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer levels. As soon as the heat wave breaks:
- Test your water using a reliable test kit or strips or bring it in to your local pool store for in depth analysis.
- Adjust chlorine, pH, and alkalinity as needed.
- Check cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels—if it’s too low, your chlorine may not be effective.
2. Shock the Pool
With higher temperatures comes increased swimmer load and the potential for algae growth. Shocking the pool helps eliminate bacteria, body oils, and contaminants that build up during extreme heat.
- Use a quality shock treatment like Poolife TurboShock®.
- Shock in the evening to prevent the sun from burning off the chlorine.
3. Inspect and Clean Your Filter
Your filter worked overtime during the heat wave, keeping your water clean despite increased use and heat. Give it the attention it deserves:
- Backwash sand or DE filters.
- Clean or replace cartridge filters if needed.
- Check for clogs and ensure proper flow.
4. Skim and Brush the Pool
Leaves, bugs, sunscreen, and other debris often collect more rapidly in extreme heat. Do a thorough cleaning:
- Skim the surface daily.
- Brush pool walls and floor to prevent algae growth.
- Vacuum the bottom if debris has settled.
5. Top Off the Water Level
Evaporation accelerates during high heat. Refill your pool if the water level has dropped below the skimmer.
- Ensure the water is at the proper level for optimal skimming and pump operation. Check your filtration system’s instructions for detailed guidance on water levels, but it should be halfway up your skimmer.
6. Keep an Eye on Swimmer Comfort
If anyone experienced eye irritation, dry skin, or your water was cloudy during the heat wave, those are signs your pool needs attention. Regular maintenance ensures a safe, enjoyable swim for all.
