Pool Care Tips During Periods of Heavy Rain
Here in Eastern North Carolina, rain is a fact of life—especially during storm season. While a light sprinkle won’t do much to your pool, a heavy downpour can throw off your water chemistry, strain your filtration system, and leave debris where you’d rather be swimming. With a little preparation and quick action afterward, you can keep your pool safe, clean, and ready for a dip.
1. Balance Your Water Before the Rain
A well-balanced pool is your best defense. Heavy rain dilutes chlorine and changes pH levels, making your water more vulnerable to algae and bacteria. Test your water before a storm and adjust chlorine, pH, and alkalinity as needed. If a big storm is on the way, consider adding a preventative dose of algaecide.
2. Guard Against Debris
Wind and rain bring more than just water—leaves, sticks, dirt, and pollen can all find their way in. Use a pool cover if you have one, or clear nearby items that could blow into the pool. Empty your skimmer basket ahead of time so it’s ready to handle extra debris.
3. Keep the Pump Running
During heavy rain, let your pump run to circulate water and filter out contaminants. Good circulation keeps chemicals evenly distributed and helps stop algae before it starts.
4. Don’t Over-Drain
Lowering your water too much before or during a storm can damage your pool. If you’re worried about overflow, only drain to the normal midway point of your skimmer. Pools are designed to stay full—even in a storm.
5. Clean Up Quickly After the Storm
Once the skies clear:
- Remove large debris with a leaf net.
- Backwash or clean your filter.
- Test and rebalance your water chemistry, focusing on chlorine, pH, and alkalinity.
- Shock the pool if chlorine is low or water looks cloudy.
6. Stay Ahead of Algae
Rain introduces phosphates and organic matter that feed algae. Treat your pool promptly after a storm to keep water sparkling clear.
